Ierapetra is the largest city in the prefecture of Lasithi. Built at the exit of a fertile valley and on the ancient Ierapytna, one of the most important cities of Crete. It has the advantage of being the southernmost city in Europe, just opposite the African coast. Ierapetra is a pleasant place to visit all year round, as the temperature seldom falls below 120 centigrade, and the mean annual temperature is 200 centigrade; also it has the most hours of sunshine and lowest rainfall of all Greece.That’s why it is considered the sunniest area for holidays throughout Europe.

One of the most famous attraction of the city is definitely the Venetian fortress Kalés, located at the entrance of the old harbor. It was built in the 13th century and is now used for cultural events. A walk along the beachside road in the afternoon to the fort is a “must”.There are also many other sights to visit, such as the mosque the Ottoman fountain, the archaelogical collection and Napoleon's house.
The wider area of Ierapetra is famous for its beaches, stretching along a vast beachfront. Almost all of them are covered by the characteristic fine black pebbles and they are awarded each single year with Blue Flags, by the European Union. All the beaches of Ierapetra, from east to west, within a distance of 15 klm is suitable for swimming. In the town there are two organized beaches, with umbrellas, sun-beds, bars, water sports etc.
As a resort, it is very popular for both its own renowned, award-winning beaches, and for the opportunity it offers as a base for exploring the surrounding areas, which include rare ecosystems (Chryssi island, the Selakhano forest), and villages (Myrtos, Gdohia, Metaxochori, Malles, Kalamafka etc.)
